Welcome to myverdict.net - Articles
The opportunies for creating a democracy from scratch are rare and when they do occur are usually based on previous examples of representative democracy.
If existing democracies were perfect, few people would complain. The abundance of people who do, suggests there is room for improvement.
myverdict.net will focus on examining some of the things amiss with existing democracies and suggest a few solutions, based on discussions between Fred Gohlke and Roy Daine. The articles arising from these discussions are scattered throughout the categories.
Anyone may post an article, or comment on any article. The more challenging , the better.
Faults with existing systems include party politics, the way we select our leaders and the way we tax.
In order to examine some real-world issues and suggest solutions, we have created a mythical community we call Missedville.
A random selection of articles appear below and the category links on the left allow you to access all of them.

OVERVIEW
Political parties are quasi-official institutions designed to acquire the reins of government. They sponsor candidates for public office by providing the resources needed to conduct a campaign for election. As a condition of their sponsorship, they require that the candidates support the party, thus giving the party ultimate control of the elected officials.
Our governmental system is defined by our Constitution, and nothing .....read more.....1 Comments
The town could expect to double its population within the next decade.
Tess Truehart had found some documents during her teens that indicated previously undiscovered reserves of .....something only recently found to be of commercial value? About 3 years ago.
Her father of course, a man who loved the people of Missedville, was loathe to exploit these reserves until they could be extracted in an environmentally friendly way and for the benefit of the town. River would need to be .....

There are many points of view about what Direct Democracy is and what the 'ideal' direct democracy should be.
Seeing as I built myverdict.net, I suppose it's only right that I put forward my own thoughts and invite criticism.
If the United Kingdom decided to become a direct democracy tomorrow, I have no doubt the experiment would fail. I don't think it can be achieved from the top down, other than to suggest and promote the concept. In addition, those in power today, have a vested i.....

In order to improve and enhance governance, we need not only to identify deficiencies in any present system but to provide workable solutions as an alternative.
Unless we base the organisation of a society on principles which we hold to be self-evident, inalienable and immutable, we are left with transient systems, with the power held by those able to enforce it. The many, controlled by a few.
As a starting point for a possible alternative to the status quo, I propose the follo.....

Money is like an iron ring we've put through our noses. We've forgotten that we designed it, and it is now leading us around. It is time to figure out where we want to go - in my opinion towards sustainability and community - and then design a money system (economic system) that gets us there. -Bernard Lietaer.
The now globally prevailing economic model lays emphasis on the Gross Domestic Product for judging the perf.....

Democrates
7 January 2008
I tend to rant and ramble on but here goes anyways. Our democratic government system is hundreds of years old and not in step with humanities needs. We have global communication to every corner of the planet. There is no reason why we cannot setup a global system of lawmaking, and governance by the population on global issues, regional issues and local issues. A "Direct Democracy". Get the entire population involved in discussions about governance and lawmaking, education and entertainment, hous.....

There are, in my view, three fundamental ways we can improve our system of government; the way we select our representatives, the way we maintain our laws, and the way we tax. The weaknesses in these areas exist because our institutions reflect our natures. If we wish to improve them, we must learn to harness our natural tendencies in ways that make them useful. What I write here will focus on one trait, the pursuit of self-interest. I will describe a simple, direct way of harnessi.....read more.....8 Comments
Prior to any debate about democracy, direct or otherwise, a fundamental issue must be accepted.
That is the 'Right' to self-determination. The principle and fundamental right to self-determination of all peoples is firmly established in international law.
'All peoples have the right to self-determination. By virtue of that right they freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development.'
It is important to note that .....

Even quiet communities seethe.
Travelers dining on succulent pheasant at Blairs, a mere trickle since the autobahn was put through, rarely glimpse the intensity that grips the town. More than the loves and jealousies that touch us all, there's a growing rumble of discontent and rage.
Nestled in the foothills, in a backdrop of snow-capped mountains, the quiet town has a long tradition of quiet prosperity and success. It bred fine, hardy, clear-thinking people; some who built t.....

In the United States, except for special circumstances, laws are enacted by a simple majority of our legislators. There are no automatic expiration provisions for our laws. As a result, unwise laws remain in effect.
This circumstance warrants closer examination.
Most of us feel "... that the majority, quite properly, has the right of decision and that rules which prevent the majority from exercising this right are oppressive". I certainly feel that way. However, experience .....

Even quiet communities seethe.
Dickens might have said ‘It was the best of towns, it was the worst of times.’
The best place to live, with the worst government in its history.
When those who seek political power are allowed to write the rules by
which that power is attained, it is unwise to imagine altruism will be
their motivating force.
Nestled in the foothills of a spectacular, snow-capped mountain range, it missed most of the foul weather associate.....

FOUNDATION
To select better leaders, we must find a way to select the most principled of our people as our representatives. The method must be democratic (i.e., allow the entire electorate to participate), egalitarian (i.e., give everyone an equal chance to participate), and it must be in harmony with natural human responses.
This outline will present such a concept in the simplest, most direct way possible. It will, necessarily, men.....read more.....62 Comments
Hi All,
Fred Gohlke and I, have begun a project to write a constitution for a community with an electorate of 10,000. It stemmed from a discussion about direct democracy, where we envisaged an off ramp from a highway, being suggested for a community that had been by-passed when the highway was built and how our 'ideal' community would accomplish this real-world task, if it was governed as a direct democracy.
We came at this from opposite sides of the DD debate, our views originally .....
